Administration Reveals Government Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark

Administration officials confirmed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official procedure for letting employees go.

While Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups sought a court injunction to block the government from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge directed the government to disclose details on layoff plans, impacted departments, and if any government staff had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

A report argued that a government shutdown limits the ability of the government to conduct terminations, referencing official advice that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs took place on the same day that federal workers received only a incomplete payment for the final days of the previous month but excluding the start of October, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” Stier stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the funding gap.
