Micky van de Ven Brace Halts Everton's Run at Brand New Stadium

The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of pitch

Following a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established strikers - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
